Face Wash & Cleanser Selection Criteria

How we decide which cleansers deserve a place here

A safe and effective face wash must clean the skin of dirt, oil, and pollution without damaging the skin's natural protective layer (the moisture barrier).

1. Must-Have Criteria (The Foundation)

Every approved cleanser must meet these baseline standards for safety and daily use.

✅ Gentle Surfactants

Surfactants (cleansing agents) must lift dirt without stripping away natural skin oils. Approved examples include Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Decyl Glucoside, or Cocamidopropyl Betaine.

✅ Barrier Support & Hydration

The formula must include humectants (ingredients that draw moisture into the skin) to prevent post-wash tightness. Look for Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid, or Ceramides.

✅ pH Balance

The cleanser should be slightly acidic (between pH 4.5 and 5.5) to match the skin's natural state and prevent bacterial overgrowth.

✅ Non-Comedogenic Formulation

The ingredients must be verified to not clog pores.

2. Optional Criteria (Skin-Specific Additions)

These ingredients are not required for a basic, effective cleanser, but they are highly beneficial for targeting specific skin concerns.

• Acne & Excess Oil → Salicylic Acid (1-2%): Penetrates deep into pores to dissolve oil and dead skin buildup.
• Dullness & Uneven Tone → Vitamin C or Alpha Arbutin: Brightens the complexion and neutralizes environmental damage.
• Redness & Irritation → Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Calms inflammation, controls oil production, and repairs the skin barrier.
• Severe Dryness → Squalane or Jojoba Oil: Provides extra nourishment and prevents moisture loss during cleansing.

3. The "Must Avoid" List (Dealbreakers)

If a product contains any of the following ingredients, it should be disqualified, as they pose risks for skin irritation or carry long-term health concerns.

❌ Harsh Sulfates (SLS and SLES)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate are aggressive detergents that strip the skin barrier, leading to extreme dryness and eventual oil overproduction.

❌ Denatured Alcohols

Often listed as Alcohol Denat or Isopropyl Alcohol. These evaporate quickly to make a product feel lightweight, but they severely dehydrate the skin over time.

❌ Artificial Fragrances and Dyes

Listed as "Parfum" or "Fragrance." These are cocktails of undisclosed chemicals that offer zero skincare benefits and are the leading cause of allergic reactions and skin sensitization.

❌ Parabens

Preservatives like methylparaben or propylparaben. They extend shelf life but carry concerns regarding hormonal disruption. Safe alternatives like Phenoxyethanol or Potassium Sorbate should be used instead.

❌ Phthalates

Often used to stabilize synthetic fragrances, these chemical compounds are linked to long-term health issues.

❌ Heavy Silicones

Ingredients like Dimethicone. While safe as a protective layer in leave-on moisturizers, they can trap dirt and debris on the skin during the washing process if not rinsed perfectly.
